Pedagogical Approaches

I have learnt various pedagogical approaches in the third session of ICT course. Choosing the different pedagogical approaches carefully for different teaching needs will definitely enhance teaching effectively. And students will have more opportunities to be exposed to experiential learning in which it will make learning more meaningful and fun. For example, using Problem Based Learning will encourage students in narrowing down to single problem and finding multiple solutions to it. And in this process, students get to learn independently and be resourceful. Another pedagogical approach example is Knowledge Building, the students will be able to learn from each other as this approach requires teamwork. Creative ideas can be generated in this process and this will encourage learning of a topic beyond the textbook context. This process will help to enrich and broaden the student’s perspectives.

  1. Dear Sock Cheng,

Many pedagogical approaches require a common way of learning which is collaboration. Like what you mentioned PBL and Knowledge Building. The trend now is to learn through social interaction for a simple reason - more heads is better than one head but my concern has always been "more heads can produce more diversity and more disagreement". Not until we get everyone in the team to accept differences and abide by the rules of "majority wins", learning will not take place in its own nature. What do you think?

  2. Thanks Mr Woo for your comments.

I agree that more head may sometimes lead to conflicts or disagreement.

But in life or in the working society we will always meet diversity issues and eventually need to find the best way to resolve it.

Therefore, in a sheltered environment like in school, students can get to experience and to handle diversity issues while going through the pedogical approaches like KB or PBL. This will definitely enhance their development on their life skills which could not be found in the textbooks.
